Demineralisation Plant or DM Plant

A system used to carry out industrial water treatment. It removes dissolved solids or minerals from process streams and feeds water to be more precise. These plants remove minerals using any one of the following procedures:

  • Deionization
  • Distillation
  • Electrodialysis
  • Membrane filtration (nanofiltration or reverse osmosis)

DM PLANT PROCESS

During demineralization, the ionic functional group gets attached to resin beads, which hold the ions carrying the opposite charge loosely through mutual electrostatic attraction. The above changes are acceptable for certain applications. However, some procedures require almost 100% removal of the dissolved solids.

DM Water Plant

A DM Water System produces mineral-free Water by operating on ion exchange, Degasification, and polishing principles. Demineralized Water System finds wide application in the field of steam, power, process, and cooling.

Demineralized water without any further enrichment is not appropriate for drinking. According to a study carried out by World Health Organization (WHO), long-term consumption of such water types may result in various health risks. The study reported that people drinking demineralized water low in calcium and magnesium is tied to a higher rate of death from cardiovascular diseases than those drinking regular water.

The most significant difference is that reverse osmosis uses a semipermeable membrane to filter water. In contrast, deionization uses ion exchange resins to replace minerals and contaminants with hydrogen and hydroxyl ions.

More and more industries have started to use DM plants to prepare a hefty resource of demineralized water. However, some industries have been using these units since their discovery. These are industries that need a high level of water purity. Here are some examples: 1. Industries that require the use of makeup water or feed for operating high-pressure boilers. 2. Food & beverage industries (they prepare rinse water using these plants) 3. Electronic goods manufacturers

Raw Water is passed via two small polystyrene bead-filled (ion exchange resins) beds. While the cations get exchanged with hydrogen ions in the first bed, the anions are exchanged with hydroxyl ions in the second one.

In the context of Water purification, ion exchange is a rapid and reversible process in which ions released by an ion-exchange resin replace impurity ions present in the water. The resin takes the impurity ions, periodically regenerates them to restore them to their original ionic form. (An ion is an atom or group of atoms with an electric charge. Positively-charged ions are called cations and are usually metals; negatively-charged ions are called anions and are usually non-metals).

Typically DM plants produce TDS < 30 ppm at the outlet, depending upon the raw water TDS. For TDS < 5 ppm, one needs to consider the Mixed Bed (MB) unit after the DM plant.
